Choosing the right battery for your boat may not be as difficult as it seems. Knowing the different battery types to choose from can certainly help.

These are more affordable because they sell at $70.13 to $165.26 whereas other batteries sell for $104.88 to $294.21 (for starting batteries) and $96.16 to $310.43 for deep cycle batteries.

The most common boat battery is the lead acid battery. It is popular because it is cheaper to purchase and maintain. However, it is heavier than other kinds, its lifespan is shorter than more advanced ones, the lead component is toxic, and forms hydrogen bubbles which when mixed with air, forms hydrogen gas, a highly explosive substance.

There are two main types of these lead acid batteries: starting batteries and deep cycle batteries. Starting batteries are, well, used to start your boat’s engines. Some car batteries can be used to do this. These batteries deliver short explosions of energy and are quickly recharged by your alternator (a generator that recharges your batteries). In contrast, deep cycle batteries provide consistent electrical energy to power your boat’s accessories including your trolling motor (used as secondary propulsion to silently maneuver boats), lights, instruments, radio, etc.

These batteries are rechargeable though its lifespan is only 3 to 4 years. The reason is that every time you use these batteries, the plate gets eaten away.

The hybrid battery or marine battery also use lead sponge but this material is heavier and sturdier than the sponge used in starting batteries. Because of this, hybrids can perform as a starting or a deep cycle battery.

Boat batteries are rechargeable but they do not last forever. Usually, a battery has a lifespan of 3 to 4 years no matter the brand or cost. This is because each time the battery is used, the plate material gets eaten away until it can no longer provide power and must be replaced.

So now you know the most common batteries for boats. Having the right battery for your needs is important. Having a battery that can be used as a starting and deep cycle battery is a big plus.
